G.O.A. GOLF OPEN

Held at Witney Lakes Resort on 10th July 2005

Organised by
Menino Mascarenhas & Jacinto D’Silva

On behalf of G.O.A. UK

G.O. A. UK , GOLF OPEN  2005  - GOLF TOURNAMENT

On a bright sunny morning on 10th July 2005 in a serene, idyllic and picturesque countryside, 54 golfers gathered to do battle, and for the first time a lady golfer participating. Their aim, to secure a place in GOA UK golfing history.

The third UK G.O.A. Golf Open got underway at Witney Lakes Resort near Oxford. The day started off in amazing unheard of Goan time keeping. About 80% of the players arrived at least half an hour before the registration time of 9:45 a.m. and caught the organisers on the hop. Golf does have a miraculous affect on time keeping.  The ladies, Flora Mascarenhas, Marsha Mascarenhas and Lourdes D’Silva registered all the players’ current handicaps, issued score cards with 7/8th of their handicap, vouchers for coffee and bacon baps, and complimentary packs consisting of vanity bags, pens, water bottles and tees.

There were basically two categories of players, the serious golfer with a current handicap and the casual golfer who plays for fun. In order to provide a level playing field, the organisers cleverly organised the tournament into 3 Divisions. The first and second Division consisted of serious golfers with proper handicaps. Division I was for GOA members whilst Division II was for guests. Division III consisted of the casual golfers.  Division 1 was further split into 2 equal groups, high and low handicappers.

The day started with a putting competition organised by Francis Dias. He made a tremendous effort to ensure that this competition went on before and after the main tournament. The proceeds from this competition together with his own generous contribution greatly assisted in keeping the costs down as well as enabled the organisers to provide outstanding prizes and give the players value for their money.

The first group at the tee got off on time at 10:30 a.m. with the last group out by about 1:00 p.m. Players teed off in groups of 3 and in relation to their playing category. At the half way point, the ladies with the assistance of Raymond D’Silva and others set up a gazebo.  As the players reached this half way point they were served with fresh fruit and cold refreshing drinks which was very welcome on a hot summer’s day. Whilst the players were taking a break for refreshments, Marsha recorded the players’ strokes of the first nine holes on her computer which automatically computed the stableford points. These scores were then recorded on the scoreboard to show the progress of the players at the half way mark.  Although the refreshments were free, the players showed their appreciation by being generous with their purchase of raffle tickets.

When the players completed their round they handed their scorecards to  Gary Rodrigues who together with George Fernandes checked the scores, loaded the remaining scores on to the computer and updated the scoreboard. The organisers also checked the handicaps of winners in Division I and II by telephoning the players’ Club or Society. Appropriate disqualification had to be made in some case to ensure fair play. Whilst all this hectic administration was underway behind the scenes, the players either participated in the putting competition or relaxed with a pint or two of beer until it was time for dinner.

The golf trophies, the score board and raffle prizes were all displayed in the grand dining room. In order to move proceedings quickly the raffle draw commenced just as dinner was being served. The star prize, donated by Radisson Hotels’ Chairman, was a night’s stay for two, worth nearly £300, at any of the Raddison’s chain of hotels in central London.  There were several other raffle prizes all of which were donated by Corporates or individuals. List of donors are shown below. As dinner was served, the evening buzzed with excitement and the usual golf banter

Dinner was followed by speeches. Flavio Gracias, the President of G.O.A. UK, thanked the organisers and helpers. He appreciated the hard work that went into making the occasion a success. He said that hopefully next year, when the GOA celebrates its Ruby anniversary, the Golf Tournament would play an important role in those celebrations.  Lazarus Rato, GOA’s Sports Director also thanked the organizers. Menino, said a few words, thanked all the participants, helpers, particularly the ladies who devoted their day to this occasion, and the individual sponsors for their kind and generous donations.

Whilst coffee was served, Jacinto announced the winners of the various events.  John Fernandes aged 13, the youngest player in the group and also the reigning champion of Middlesex County Golfers (under 13’s and under 14’s) won the overall Division I prize as well as the George Mistry Memorial silver floating trophy.  He played of 7/8th of his 11 handicap and scored 38 points.

GOA OPEN 2006
At Traditions Golf Club – Woking Surrey on 1st July 2006

Report from the Organisers

Another event in beautiful hot sunshine which proved to be a great success thanks to all the help and support we received. We had some good feed back on the day as well as by e-mail from players and we appreciate your compliments and constructive comments for future improvements.

The number of entrants exceeded our expectations by nearly ten players, but we must say it was hard work for the two of us to manage a large field, and our apologies to players whom we had to turn down and also those in Division 3 who had to sort themselves out in the later tee time due to some no shows. We will definitely address this problem for next year.

As you will see from the attached sheets there were quite a few low scores, this was due to some players only playing nine holes due to heat exhaustion!! and a few wanting to watch the  World Cup football.

We thank the GOA board, Flavio and Bernie Gracias, Lourdes D’Silva,  Flora Mascarenhas, Marsha Mascarenhas, Emmaline Fernandes, Gary Rodrigues, George Fernandes, Bobby Fernandes, Eusebio Fernandes, Hillary Fernandes &  Francis Dias for the tremendous help they gave us in making this occasion a success. We also  thank Agnelo, Thomas and John Fernnades for the excellent golf clinic they provided after the event.  If you weren't there you missed some great professional demonstration and coaching tips.

Finally our thanks to those of you who donated and sponsored prizes for the tournament and raffle, namely:
Air Links Golf Club
Aaron Colaco
Clare D’Silva
Conie Mascarenhas
Felix Pereira
Francis Dias

This is a non profit competition and the GOA rely on your generosity by donating prizes either for the competition or towards the raffle and we welcome your continued support.
