CHAMPIONS FINALLY!!
Traveling to Guildford for our most important game of the season, we encountered 2 hailstone storms, with some of the passengers stating they weren't looking forward to playing in such poor weather. We all arrived at the ground very early (makes a change), and noticed the water based astro was covered with a layer of hailstones - completely white. We were assured that the game would still be played. So we all got into the away changing room, there were 14 available players, and the starting 11 was announced, followed by a team talk.
Guildford had quite a few changes to their team from the last time we played them, whilst we had 2 new starters with a couple as subs.
We had Jazz playing at right full back, in place of the injured Michael and Sam playing in the middle with Darren, the rest were all made up from our regulars. These we the starting 11.
Goldwyn - G.Kpr
Jazz - Right Back
Glyn - Left Back
Shafiq - Right Half
Sukor - Centre Back
Sharon - Left Half
Darren - R. Centre Half
Sam - L. Centre Half
Mzee - C. Fwd
Jaffri - R. Wing
Indy - L. Wing
Subs: Gus, Zul, Thari
Right from the whistle, we attacked, and we had Guildford penned back in their half for the first 15 minutes. Sam and Darren bossing things in the middle, and we attacked down our left flank with Indy seeing a lot of the ball, but was not very incisive and too often the move broke down deep into their territory, without getting the ball into the dee. At the back, we were comfortably mopping up any counter attacks and passing the ball on to our mid-field who initiated our attacks.
We scored our opening goal from a short corner, where Glyn's initial strike was saved by the GK and he then had a second bite, which was also saved, however the ball fell to Darren and he slotted home from close range. We continued to attack with Jaffri terrorising their left half and we had plenty of possession. Their Umpire was pedantic to say the least and a reckless tackle on Darren went un-punished, with Darren being warned about taking revenge ....... (hello Umpire, how about warning their player first !).
Our 2nd goal was all about simplicity and accuracy, Glyn had a 16yd hit on the top left of our dee, he arrowed a cross field pass to Jaffri on the right wing, where he controlled it, looked up and pushed a fantastically weighted pass thru 2 defenders, straight to darren running towards the opposition dee. Darren picked up the ball just inside the dee and unleashed an unstoppable first time shot past the advancing GK.....just a fantastic goal. We then made a couple of substitutions, however, Jaffri's removal was a tad strange, as he was playing very well on the right flank, and in the last 5 minutes we began to ship a lot of pressure, but managed to hold out without conceding, and Goldwyn made a good save when one on one with their right winger.
At half time, we were told to keep possession and look for the 3rd goal that would kill them off. Guildford came out of the blocks very purposefully and Zul had a torrid time at left half. We managed to prevent any direct shots at goal, and began to play on the break. Chances fell to Indy, Mzee and Jazz but we just could not score that elusive 3rd goal, and play was defend and counter attack. Jaffri came on for Thari who was not having the best of games on the right wing, and immediately he had a couple of chances, both of which he fluffed. Then from a good break there was a melee in the dee and Indy was sharp enough to stab the ball home from close range. Jaffri then missed two good efforts, hitting a shot past the near post and then he had a good chance when Indy's first time shot was parried by the GK helmet and Jaffri volleyed over the cross bar.
We then scored our 4th goal after good play by Jazz, Shafiq and Mzee saw the ball played across the dee and Sam arriving late from mid-field, slapped a tremendous shot into the net from the top left hand side of the dee.
We had a few short corners towards the end and Jazz had 2 chances, one which he flicked wide, and the 2nd he beat men and was stick tackled and deserved a penalty stroke but was only awarded a short corner to his disgust.
We ended the game as deserved winners, however there was a lot of complaining by both teams,, directed towards the Umpires, that rightly or wrongly should have been curbed.
M.O.M. - Jazz (ran the show) - however, there were fine performances in mid-field from Sam and Darren too.
We opened a bottle of bubbly in the changing rooms to celebrate followed by Teas and lots of celebrating in the bar. Most of the boys stayed and we had a very good evening. Plenty of Feni and Budweiser was had by all.
Thanks to Michael and Robert for supporting us on the day, and Merryl for Umpiring.
